Hi Carol,
Thanks for the interest!  At the moment I'm actually porting the GUI to 
nw.js, which puts things into a state of chaos.  The good news is that 
the UI will use HTML5 technologies, which should make it more accessible 
for people who want to help with usability of the program.  (I cringe 
when I think about digging into the build scripts.)

The stable version which uses tcl/tk for the GUI takes about 30 minutes 
to build everything in Ubuntu.  There's a custom script which _should_ 
take care of everything, but it's not exactly a standard build process 
so it might be tricky.  But once I finish the port we'll probably use 
the same build process.  Any feedback you can give would be appreciated.

If you successfully get it to load, there's a little game I wrote that 
shows a bit how the interface works:
