Hey Douglas,

Much of the skills learned are in our workshops are actively used across the industry (Git, IRC). Many professionals who produce open source software are well connected in the larger tech industry, thus the connections made on September 13th will outlast their time here at CCSF. Contributing code to open source projects is accessible to anyone and is a great way to impress a potential employer as it shows technical prowess and initiative. Open source projects offer both low and high hanging fruit for students of all levels to grind their teeth on, allowing students of all levels to participate and learn at their own pace.

We have not considered organizing any events involving a competition, however I am sure there are many students in the Coders Club and at CCSF who would love to participate in one!

While a small portion of industry uses open source software the vast majority of companies do not.  I have to ask why you are limiting yourself and your fellow students?  Have you thought of creating a team to compete in the Imagine cup or similar contests?

I have been the facility advisor for students competing in cyber-competitions.  The past two years my students have taken first place in the United States National Cyber Challenge.  The students received $1,000 check and a personally signed letter or recognition from the President of the United States.

Good Afternoon CNIT Teachers,
I am a current student and member of the Coders Club here at CCSF. I would like to invite you and your students to an event that the Coders Club is hosting!
For the third semester in a row, The Coders Club will be hosting an event called "Open Source comes to CCSF" on September 13th on the Ocean Campus in MUB 140, 9am - 6pm. "Open Source" means software which original source code is made freely available to the public, for anyone to contribute to. The idea of this event is for students to spend the day learning real world programming skills from local open source contributors and maybe even contribute their own code to open source projects. We plan to have programming workshops, a career panel, and free breakfast and lunch!
Any level of student is encouraged to come. The workshops are aimed at students just entering the field of programming, and the benefits of getting to meet local contributors will outlast a students time here at CCSF.
