[Campus-hartnell-staff] planning another Open Source Comes to Campus event for the fall

Thanks Katie!

Hi Shauna,

Thank you for considering our request. Katie explained the motivation for
the 1-unit course pretty well - to add my 2 cents, we think the content,
ideas and skills communicated at the OpenHatch workshop is very valuable.
We hope that adding the structure of a course to it will encourage/require
more of our students to actively engage in the topic. If we do this well,
it will be easy to offer it in future years with institutional support and
at that point it will easier to duplicate it in other institutions.

Now to your question: we totally understand the workload challenges and
will work with you to accommodate your situation. I would think the
following actions will be needed to offer such a course (we will be happy
to help you in all of these steps).

   1. Create a syllabus (sample syllabus here
   <https://docs.google.com/document/d/1loeavQABcBTUwkvxlq7k4DFYRkcU5vwqs7f-oBnn9eQ/edit?usp=sharing>)
   and associated schedule (here
   <https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/16YxypqN6FLVkgPRi1W3BmXOa-9YLsMCx_9E0W29e6uw/edit#gid=0>
   )
   2. Prep for the in class presentations/activities
   3. Create assignments/projects - number of assignments/project is up to
you within the constraints of student learning and time commitment (up to
24 hours of work outside the class for the students)
   4. Teach/coach first session
   5. Maintain some office hours (~2hrs/week) online (GHO or Skype) to be
able to answer questions - we will have a TA available locally to take care
   quick/easier questions
   6. Respond to email questions from students
   7. Grade assignments if any - depending on the learning objectives, type
of assignments - this effort could vary - we can get TA support for this.
Or, it is also possible to setup the course as Pass/Fail rather than letter
grades - to reduce the granularity of grading
   8. Teach/coach second session
   9. More office hours to support project work
   10. Final grading
   11. Enter grades

I apologize for the long email - wanted to provide a comprehensive picture.
There is reasonable amount of flexibility in how the course is structured.
I am leaving out a bit of a paperwork to apply and get hired as a lecturer
at CSUMB :)

We are very motivated about this and believe that this will be very useful
for our students. We realize that we are asking for a bigger commitment and
effort from you, but it is a one time investment to develop the components
- usually can be duplicated multiple times with small tweaks, reaching a
large group of students, who otherwise may not get such deep exposure.

Please let me know if you have any questions. I am happy to talk with you
if that would work better.

Best,
Sathya
