[Campus-hartnell-staff] following up

I think that the event was a huge success. How do I know? The students are
*so* excited by open source now! Today during the enrichment session, I
asked if students would (as Asheesh suggested) like some additional
structured time where they are supported in making their first OS
contribution. The answer was a resounding yes!! The plan is that the Friday
after finals are over will be dedicated to helping students make their
first open source contribution. We're calling it "Open Source Day". Even
students historically who haven't been the most confident are excited about
the event. One student went into an extended metaphor where he compared OSS
to a group of engineers coming to build a bridge together---something
fantastic that doesn't happen in many places besides Open Source.

Also, the students are a lot more confident with the command line! Today we
talked about the parts of C++ compilation, and we compiled a multi-file
project in the Ubuntu VMs using g++ (instead of what they're used
to---building in Visual Studio). Everyone could follow along, and it's
clear students are building an intuition for the command line. The other
day, a student told me that she "really really liked" the command line, and
was going to move her current coding project to the Ubuntu VM!

Also, students have kept asking me questions about the mentors and for
their email addresses. If you don't want to be emailed, let me
know---though it may be too late! I keep hearing snippets of conversation
like "Didn't $MENTOR say he did $COOL_PROJECT?" I think for most students,
the highlight of the day was time talking to the mentors in small groups.

I'm not sure exactly you did it, but you've made the students see the value
of the command line and version control, and they are generally more
confident and ready to try their hand at contributing. It's amazing!

Best,
Katie
