Howdy all event peeps,

I had the honor of leading a panel about diversity outreach
OpenHatch-style at PyCon, and I wanted to send a quick note about it here
to the Events list.

First of all, let me thank the panelists. They all provided insightful
discussion and illuminating imagery that helped the audience get a sense
of how programming user groups across the US (and beyond!) are changing
their demographics and bringing up their newcomer-friendliness.

They were:

* Jessica McKellar, Boston Python Workshop

* Daniel Choi, Railsbridge Boston

* Dana Bauer, PyStar Philly

* Naomi Ceder, Chicago Python Workshop

Special props to Jessica for focusing the conversation on the pipeline
that it takes to create sustained change within a community.

We had some great questions from the audience, and then we had some
audience members (and all the speakers!) come to the OpenHatch booth,
where we held OpenHatch Office Hours. At Office Hours, we got some great
questions, especially:

Anthony came to talk to us about bringing diversity up within the SciPy
2013 conference.

A person talked with us about porting the Boston Python Workshop structure
the growing Node.js community within her locality. (Sadly I have forgotten
where she is based.)

We had some great questions, too -- one attendees wondered how to balance
their own family lives with the work of making their user group a great
place. Another wondered how to do the publicity work it takes to get a
more diverse attendee base.

Thanks again to the panelists for making it a great event and to PyCon for
letting us connect with attendees!

All four of these events are OpenHatch-affiliated events, and if you are
running an outreach event and want to be more plugged into this community
of great people, do make your event Affiliated with OpenHatch! You can
read more about that new term here:
https://openhatch.org/wiki/Events/Affiliated

(And one day I'll actually write a blog post announcing that "Affiliated
events" thing.)
