May 29 would be a lot better for me, as I'll be offline on May 28 (long
weekend).

is the form I'm imagining we send out. I can write text that we send out
to various mailing lists (including campus at lists.openhatch.org). For
the RSVP, I'm fine with not making it mandatory, but we should have a very
clear sign-up link at the top of the main info page for the event We
can write underneath that, "or just read more info (signup is optional)".
Also, if it's possible for you to keep the subject lines and threading intact
for mails to the list, that'd be great. If not, that's just life.
