I'll do an email intro for the OpenMRS folks. We've already asked them to attend an event at IUB the day before, so they may not be up for traveling again. But it's certainly worth asking!

That's correct -- I have a workshop in Mississippi, the travel plans for which might interfere with Sunday the 16th and definitely Saturday the 15th. I'll know more soon. But the previous weekend would work for me.

I think generally Sunday is better for us (in terms of student participation, anyway). I've just made a room reservation application for a central place on campus for Sunday -- it has tables, chairs, and a few more electrical outlets than we did last time.

So -- last year we organized via Google Docs and a mailing list, but since you use Trello now (?) what do I need to do to get us started? All the old mailing list information should still be relevant, and I have (currently Facebook-only) contacts at a couple of women-in-* groups to (hopefully) make sure the message gets out in that direction. The PLUG (Purdue Linux Users' Group) is going to help out with advertising and may be able to provide mentors from their student members, too.

I can definitely help with the mailing, but I'd like you folks to take the lead role. So feel free to say, "Shauna, can you customize and send publicity emails to these 10 departments", for instance, but you'll have to actively ask me to do it. :) That goes for pretty much all aspects of organizing the event: I am happy to help where needed, but I'll wait for you to ask. (Mostly. Sometimes I also send emails like "Did you remember to send out reminder emails?" or "Maybe we should talk about food").
The Trello board should help us delegate responsibility between the three of us and make sure everything gets done. :)

Yeah, there are elements of OSCTC that would really fit in a hackathon, and I'm all for having hackathons focus on teaching and community building (which I think they're far better suited for than building actually usable products).

So glad to hear it! re: the text -- the second interpretation is correct. We're hoping to run a bunch of events remotely and simultaneously. We tried this out during the spring a few times, and it worked quite well.
Do you have a sense of when you'll know re: the timing? It's okay if it's not for a while, but I'm trying to get a sense of when we'll know even if I don't know what we'll know. :)

Since here at Purdue we have access to a couple of groups of more experienced contributors (the Greater Lafayette Open Source Symposium, the Purdue Linux Users' Group, etc.) -- and, as a result of last year's event, slightly more open lines of communication with them :) -- I wouldn't say that having an OHer here with us is as critical to the event's success, so I think we'll be fine with a more self-guided thing, but I just wanted to make sure I was reading you right.

Last fall you helped us bring our introductory open source event, Open Source Comes to Campus, to your school. Since then we’ve done a lot of work improving our curriculum and our event-planning process. We’d love to have another, even better Open Source Comes to Campus event at Purdue.
(I am especially excited about this because several maintainers for OpenMRS are in Indianapolis and have expressed interest in helping people contribute to OpenMRS at an event.)
Anyway, some of the major changes we’ve made:

We are no longer running events personally, though OpenHatch people still frequently attend events as mentors. This means we need one or more local people to take on the role of lead organizer. Could it be you?

To aid in the above, we’ve put all of our curriculum and logistics information online. For instance, this trello board lists the specific tasks that need to be done for a typical event (though your event may have different needs).
•
We provide help in a number of other ways, as listed on the program website , you can find the details of what’s involved in running a full day event, and how we can support you.
•
We’re creating self-guided versions of our entire curriculum. This means, practically, that you’ll never have to worry about a mentor dropping out and having to teach something you’re not comfortable with yourself -- you and the attendees of your event can always go through self-guided versions together.
There’s plenty of other changes that I think make our events even better! I’m happy to answer any questions you have about this.
A practical note: this fall, we will be running events on three weekends: September 13th & 14th , October 18th & 19th , and November 15th & 16th . We understand that the process for reserving space varies from school to school. Please let us know if you’re generally interested in running an event and we’ll figure out together which, if any, of those weekends will work for you.
