[Campus-hartnell-staff] planning another Open Source Comes to Campus event for the fall

Hi Shauna,

Apologies for the radio silence---I've had a really bad case of strep
throat for the past few days. I have made some progress though.

*General focus of event:*

I know that my survey hasn't really been that helpful, but the overwhelming
sense I've gotten from students is that they really want to make a
contribution---something concrete that's their own. The other sense is that
students are really excited to see the mentors from last time again. I
think for the students it's a rare window into the sort of world and
culture of programming in Silicon Valley.

You mention meeting the student where they're at, and I think that's
exactly the right idea. To confirm this I'd like to have some related
questions in the sign-up survey for students. I can get that rolling once I
figure out the google docs (last question in this email).

Shauna, should we set up a video meeting to hammer down the details of the
event? I'm also happy to do this by email, in another thread. I think one
thing I'd like to see is many bite-sized bugs available for students to
sink their teeth into.

*Mentors:*

I have 2 local mentors confirmed, and 2 that are probable (especially if
they can get a ride from SF). I have also sent out emails to a few more
local open source people.

Last time, it was clear that having mentors who were very well-versed were
the most useful. I think the two mentors I've recruited so far are great,
but like me they haven't been immersed in the open source world. If we
could get one more mentor with a high level of experience, I think that
would be great,

I also think we need to get information about the relative skills of the
mentors. I'll send the sign-up survey that asks about skills to all the
recruited mentors I've found.

Finally, I know that Larissa Shapiro was very interested in helping last
time, but had other things come up. I know last time Shauna reached out to
potential mentors like her. Is that something that's happening already, or
something I should do?

*Time/room reservation:*

I've been trying to get a room at Hartnell for the past few days but the
person who is in charge of room reservations has been unavailable. I
believe she'll be able to confirm the room tomorrow (Wed). However, it is
certain that we can get some appropriate room(s) at Hartnell Alisal Campus
for Nov 15. Apologies for the delay, I should have done this first. But I
believe I can put the website together with room TBD for now.

Does the 11-6 time work well, as we did last time (perhaps with 10:30-11
for optional environment setup)? If there's no objections, I'm happy to set
that time and then we can figure out the best way to fill it as we confirm
content.

I think I can move forward with the other updates in the Trello board, and
also copy this info there. One question about that--last time there was a
series of google docs that were incorporated into planning. Is there a
special way to get a new set of those, or should I just make a duplicate of
the old folder and share you on it, Shauna?

Sorry for all the questions, but happy to get the train rolling :)

Best,
Katie
